Dr Frank Anderson explores how Internal Family Systems can help overcome the effects of trauma
Description:

Suffering from repeated relational violations or complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can often feel like being on a roller coaster. In addition to anxiety and depression, we often struggle with overwhelming emotions, extreme reactivity, difficulty setting limits, and volatility in their relationships.

The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of therapy has a unique way of addressing and overcoming the complexities of repeated relational trauma. It deals with the cognitive by addressing and unloading distorted thoughts and beliefs, it incorporates the body as it supports the movement and discharge of physical sensations, and it facilitates the release of painful feelings (such as unworthiness, loneliness, and unlovability) by healing the wounds that parts of us carry.

This workshop with help you:

  • Explore the range of overwhelming life experiences you can experience and examine how IFS is different from traditional forms of treatment.
  • Discover the importance empathy and compassion as it relates to Self-energy, (our inherent wisdom or healing capacity).
  • Learn how to safely and effectively access the pain and vulnerability within.
  • Discover the impact of early attachment wounding on adult intimate relationships.
  • Delve into common adaptations of relational trauma such as neglect, shame, disordered eating, and substance-use and suicidal ideation.
  • Discover the core components of healing complex PTSD.
  • Review the neurobiology of PTSD and dissociation and incorporate neuroscience knowledge into decision making as it relates to permanently releasing the trauma that no longer serves you.

The workshop will include lecture, video, live demonstrations and personal exercises to enhance your learning.

About the speaker, Frank Anderson

Frank Anderson MD is a psychiatrist, trauma specialist and author of Transcending Trauma and Internal Family Systems Skills Training Manual. He is lead trainer and consultant for the IFS Institute, an advisor to the International Association of Trauma Professionals (IATP), and maintains a private practice.

Frank trained in psychiatry at Rush University Medical College in Chicago. During his residency at Harvard Medical School, he realised that many of his clients struggling with major mental illness had also experienced significant trauma in their lives. The pain he witnessed in others activated something deep within himself, compelling him to enter therapy, which quickly connected him to his own trauma history.

He served as a psychiatrist at the Trauma Center in Boston under the direction of Bessel van der Kolk. After a meeting with Richard Swartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, he integrated his knowledge of neuroscience and trauma treatment with Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.
