We welcome Dr Miguel Farias and Catherine Wikholm to Aternatives for the first time on Monday 7th March
Description:

Meditation is no longer ‘alternative’. It’s being taught in schools, the NHS, and the workplace. The media regularly report how science is discovering the benefits of meditation, such as its power to lower stress or improve well-being.

But meditation techniques weren’t originally devised to make us feel better but to deeply challenge who we think we are. Either something is getting lost in the mainstreaming of meditation or we’re not being told the whole story.

Join Miguel and Catherine this evening as they share their journey of personal exploration and scientific research into meditation. Miguel was a lecturer at Oxford University, specialising in the psychology of spirituality, when he met clinical psychologist Catherine.

Together they embarked on a study of how yoga and meditation could change prisoners, which led them to look deeply into the science of meditation and personal change.

Together they wrote ‘The Buddha Pill’, a book which explores the potential of meditation to bring about personal change, but also disputes many of the myths commonly held about meditation, and has led to a public discussion about its dark side.

Be prepared to have your ideas about meditation challenged.
